The First Step is Important

The First Step is Important

Taking steps is all about getting people to make movement a part of their everyday lives. The body is built for movement, and like the old car out in the shed, it will just rust away if not used regularly. If you are already regularly active, great, just make sure that you maintain that existing habit. If you are not getting sufficient activity in the course of the normal day, now is the time to take the first step to better health and well-being.

First set small achievable goals.

Don’t make that first step too big, but make the first step. Set small achievable goals that will make you feel better physically and mentally. Make your goal specific and measurable, a 10-minute walk every day, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or going for a swim at least once a week.

Second, increase your activity.

Whether you are an elite athlete, or someone who does little physical activity, the principles are the same. You must progressively increase your daily activity levels. Start with small increases in your normal routine and gradually increase these as your body responds to being used. It will respond, no matter you age or fitness, and you will feel better, stronger and able to take on more activity.

Third, set a specific time each day to be active.

You are trying to establish a habit so start off by establishing a routine. Walk to the shops for the paper each morning, go for a short walk after work. Set aside that time and stick to it. You don’t need to use a lot of time, but it does have to be come a priority.

Above all, do activities you like with people you like.

The body is meant to move and it has great ability to do so in many different ways. There is no magic activity, just the one that is best for you.
