Group Fitness Classes

Group fitness classes are a fun way to exercise in a social environment in a way that is also challenging and constantly changing. Under the guidance of a qualified group fitness instructor you will be taken through a range of exercises and activities to help improve your strength, fitness, flexibility, endurance and speed.

For some people, exercising in the gym can become boring after a while. When you are doing the same things day in, day out it is easy to lose motivation. Often people find their fitness increases to a certain point going it alone, but need some guidance to be able to take things to the next level.

Group fitness classes are usually held in gyms and also held in small groups by personal trainers, both in gyms and studios and in the outdoors.

What Can I Expect in a Group Fitness Class?

No matter what your sport or activity of choice is there is likely a group fitness class that will suit you. From step aerobics to boxing fitness, bikram yoga to dancing classes, group fitness classes cross all genres.

If it’s your first class be sure to introduce yourself to the instructor. They may be able to give you some advice about how to get the most out of the class. If you have any injuries or are pregnant, you should let them know at this stage.

Group fitness classes usually begin with a warm up which will run for five or ten minutes. After that its time to step things up a bit, and really start moving. A lot of group fitness classes work on the concept of interval training. Your heartbeat should increase for a period of time, then be allowed to decrease over a rest period, then be set for another peak. This system allows for the greatest increase in cardio vascular fitness, while also allowing for work on muscle strength during the periods of lowered heart rate.

At the end of the class there will be a cool down and stretching session. Afterwards your instructor will be available to answer any questions you may have.
